Trophy ChartThe trophy chart was my studio incentive last year, and since it was such a big hit, I am doing it again. Students earn points for each day practicing, telling me the fact of the week for the composer of the month, learning scales and technique, memorizing, composing, participating in the local MTA events, etc.For every 25 points, the students get a sticker on the chart. When they get to the top line of a color, they earn a trophy that is the same height. Students love to watch their trophies “grow” throughout the year, and they can see how tall the trophy actually is. As an added bonus, although students are only competing against themselves, there is huge motivation in seeing how their progress rates against the other students in the studio.

I print 2 copies of the chart, then cut and tape them together for the finished product.

  1. do you actually give up to 8 trophies to each student or am I misunderstanding the concept?

  2. Oh, no, I couldn’t afford that! Each student gets one trophy. The trophy simply gets taller as the student earns more points.

  4. The trophy itself doesn’t get bigger – but students get taller trophies as they earn points on the chart.

  5. I have just found your website and it is fantastic! Thank you so much for all your work and sharing. I had a question about your trophy chart. What sort of point schedule do you use? That is, how do you decide how many points to attribute to each category, etc. so everyone has a shot at a trophy…but they still have to work for it.

  6. Here is my point system:
    1 point for each practice day
    and/or 1point per practice goal (dynamics, phrasing, etc.)
    1 point for every 4 measures of memorized music (keeps things even between elementary through advanced students)
    1 point for each scale learned
    1 point for telling me the fact for the week about the composer of the month
    5-10 points for participating in various MTA events
    Any number of points for any other things I decide a student needs extra incentive for.

  7. D’Net, how did you decide on the number of rows to designate for each color/trophy size area? I would think that you wouldn’t want to make earning the tallest trophy too easy, but also you wouldn’t want it to be impossible either. I notice in your picture, that the bulk of students are in the bottom yellow section with just a few creeping higher, and one already at the top. If a student makes it to the top, do they loose the incentive to keep practicing, etc. due to the fact that there are no more trophies to earn? Thanks.

  8. I based the smallest trophy on the minimum I wanted the students to do. At the time, this was practice 5 days a week, and tell me about the composer of the week. That would earn them 6 points a week, and about 25 points a month. So, each student would earn 1 sticker a month, and the 10 stickers in the yellow section would equal the small trophy.

    From there, I just based the rest on the size of the trophies that were available – 10, 12, 14, 16, inches, and so on. I think the tallest anyone actually earned (aside from the one girl) was the 14 inch trophy. That would be the top of the 1st purple section.

    I was going to stop it at the 14 inch trophy, but decided to go higher just for kicks. My one student that got to the top of the chart memorized over 50 hymns. She earned lots of points that way! She didn’t loose incentive, because she is the type of student that will practice just because she loves it.

    You could add up the maximum points you think a student would feasibly earn, and use that as your top number.
