Lets Have a Spelling Bee!

This is another of Sharon’s great ideas. I used Natalie’s list of words that can be spelled with the musical alphabet at musicmattersblog.com to make these cards. One side is the word spelled on the staff, and the other side is the word written out. All words are spelled in both clefs. The lines of the staff don’t look perfect on my computer screen, but they print out beautifully.

Line students line up in 2 teams and have students try to say the word before the other team. Another variation is to show the word side of the card and have students write the word on staff paper or a white board. They could work individually, or race against each other. This would be a great game for a group lesson.  To use in an individual lesson, have students play the words that are spelled on the keyboard.  Maybe they could use a couple of their favorite words to begin their own composition.

Post any other ideas of how to use the cards in the comments below!

  1. Hi, I actually used the blocks that were shown on this website and wrote the notes on the staff and the students had to grab the block to spell the word- very similar to the idea of just yelling it out, but they had fun grabbing for the blocks to spell the word. It was really fun.

  2. Oh, Lisa! What a great idea! I somehow forgot to include the scale blocks when I redid the site, but they are here now.

    Thanks!

  3. Hi D’net,
I really enjoy and playing your games with my students, I think you are a really great teacher, very wise to share your ideas with other teachers, and for sure we are lucky to have someone like you. I was wonder have you ever think about making games or homework worksheet for students during the 8 weeks long summer holiday for the kids? God Bless you all.

    Musically yours,
    Samantha Yoon

  4. Thanks you, Samantha! I’m glad that you are enjoying the games and such. I haven’t made homework sheets for the summer months as I teach year round. I require students to take a minimum of 4 lessons over the summer to retain their place in the Fall. I have sent games home with my students to play, though. You could find lots of homework type sheets to send with students at http://www.practicespot.com.

    Hope that helps!

  9. I love your website! This is an excellent resource. Thank you for doing this – it has helped me as a first year teacher immensely. I used these after I laminated them as a small group project. the students used dry erase markers to write the words and compete to see who had the most. Thank you
